10th Street Nursery: Room Tour (+ a Gender Reveal!)

Every so often we get the honor of working with past clients on new projects and it truly is so much fun. There’s a level of trust previously developed, and designing our 10th Street Projects’ Nursery was nothing short of a dream come true!

In 2018, Nathan and Ashley hired our team to work with L&B Limited to help create an inviting modern-traditional home in the heart of the Heights. Together, we customized several aspects in the design of the home including paint colors, decorative lighting, and hardware. When the build was complete, our team gave an updated nod to traditional pieces by layering colors and patterns to create a truly unique space that boasts of vibrant color. Outside of color in this home, one of our favorite things was the unique art that was chosen. Every piece has value and draws you into the space. It all serves as the perfect compliment to the furnishings we chose for each room.

Over time, Nathan and Ashley have grown to be dear friends. When they learned that they were pregnant with their third baby, we met to dream together about the nursery. Ashley shared that not only did she want us to design the space, but that they were not finding out the gender of the baby until birth and they wanted the nursery to be a surprise as well. When we designed the rest of the home, Ashley’s main request was “anything but beige.” We knew that we were going to be able play off of Ashley’s love for color and layering patterns in this new space as well - and we couldn’t wait!

When Nathan and Ashley went to the hospital for a planned delivery, our team installed the entire room, minus painting the walls.

We chatted about the project with Domino a little bit back and they captured it perfectly, stating:

“'Having that request and Yates’s full trust, Davis’s team operated independently, revealing nary a fabric sample so as to keep the project a surprise until the big reveal. They pulled the palette back to a series of lighter shades (a sophisticated spin on primaries) to not overwhelm the smaller space—but still bring in some character. Against a soothing green backdrop on the walls, touches of sunflower yellow and poppy red in the flush-mount fixture and throw pillow make the room feel fun yet versatile enough to flip into a guest bedroom, should the two boys bunk in together someday. To blend in with the rest of the home, pale blue via the canopy, drapes, and glider creates another subtle note. “I treat it as a neutral because it goes with just about everything,” says Davis.

Rather than bring in standard children’s furniture and decor, Davis found upholstery options that reimagined the Yateses’ favorite pieces for their newcomer to enjoy. “They already had the glider, but we spruced it up in a gingham pattern,” she notes. That same fabric makes an appearance lining a trio of stacking wicker baskets in the corner—a simple but impactful way to tie the room together. More storage pops up in the form of a custom-covered velvet bench that tames toy overflow and the bookshelf on the opposite wall, which holds baskets for separating books and more toys. And layering wicker and raffia into everything from the playful wall-mounted animal heads to a floor lamp adds texture with timeless appeal. “Anything woven I say yes to,” admits Davis. “He’s only 6 months old,” says Yates of her new arrival, “but I’m so happy to know that he has pieces that will continue to work for years to come.” And ultimately the tiniest client was always top of mind. “We tried to make it his,” says Davis.”

While we’re obsessed with how the design turned out, I’m not sure that we will ever forget bringing Nathan, Ashley, and Baby Smith into his new, sweet room. Our clients truly are the greatest part of this job, and this home is a project that will be imprinted in our memories forever.
