Viking : Girls Room

Having designed for this client previously, we were so excited to return to create a “big kid” room for a 3-year-old girl who was expecting a new sibling. The room had a butterfly patterned wallpaper leftover from the nursery that the client wanted to keep on the wall. Rather than shy away from the bold pattern with neutral tones and basic drapery, we took the “more is more” approach, and jumped right in.

We wanted the bed and drapes to complement the wall but feel cohesive. We opted for larger scale blue ticking striped drapes; and designed a custom headboard in a solid peach fabric, with complementary citron Euro shams. The floral on the bolster contains a similar hues as the ticking stripe, while its trim ties in the headboard. We purposefully integrated some strong solids to simplify. Another unifying element was the symmetry of the mirroring window treatments, bedside lamps and nightstands were imperative to the cohesiveness of this room.

We believe the best kids’ room designs include furniture that can grow with kids over the years—classic pieces that stand the test of time. Here, we integrated a custom bed, upholstered chair and playful ottoman; plus the client’s existing bookshelves and dresser. A garment rack with her favorite dresses, made our mini client feel all grown-up. We couldn’t be happier with how this sweet room transitioned!
